Not a great experience especially if you’re multitasking and using the app for business purposes. My only option was to power down my Chromebook. My poor Pixelbook Go immediately started freaking out and Viber went into an endless loop of opening and closing from which there was no recovery. The problems arise when you attempt to minimize the app. The Viber Android app installs just fine. My initial question was “why not use the Android app?” After installing and attempting I confirmed what was told to me by my inquisitor. After a little back and forth about the specifics of his situation, he told me he needed Viber for work and really wanted to use it on his Chromebook. That brings me back to my weekend conversation with the user of an HP Chromebook x360 14. If your go-to device is mobile, this is really a non-issue but with so many people now working from home, installing Viber on a desktop can be a big productivity boost for tan eams using the messaging app. Sadly, that does not include Chrome OS because there isn’t a web client. In order to use Viber, you will have to install the Android or iPhone application, link your phone number and then, you can install the desktop client on your Mac, PC or Linux device and sync them with a QR Code. That’s not to say Viber isn’t cross-platform. I don’t know the reason for this but it is likely due to the fact that Viber prides itself as the “most secure” messenger on the planet. The one shortfall of Viber is that it does not offer a web-based interface like WhatsApp, Android Messages, Hangouts and the list goes on. You can chat with people on the Viber app or you can make calls that are referred to as “Viber Out” by adding money to your account balance and dialing just as you would with most applications. Where Viber stands out is its ability to make voice calls internationally for quite less than standard phone plans and calling cards. The app itself looks really inviting and it appears to offer similar features to WhatsApp and many other chat apps. What is Viber you ask? Yeah, I wasn’t exactly familiar with it either but over 1 billion people around the globe depend on Rakuten’s messaging platform for chat, calls and even video conferencing. Lastly, despite being smaller than the others, Zoom offers massive versatility while remaining at a lower price than others, despite not being entirely free.Over the weekend, I received a message from a reader who was desperately trying to get Viber working on his Chromebook. The app has both a free and licensed version that allows users to take full advantage of its features. Skype, specifically Skype for Business, is a conference, telephone, and chatting app available on multiple devices. Despite this, there’s a smaller limit to how many individuals can connect at one time to Adobe Connect. Alongside this, the app also offers co-browsing and breakout rooms. Adobe Connect, Skype, and Zoom all are alternatives to Microsoft Teams.Īdobe Connect offers much of the same as Microsoft Teams but at a monthly or annual cost. There’s a Microsoft Teams (mac) for Microsoft Teams as online platforms for conferencing grow in popularity. This detracts from the app’s value since the presence of breakout rooms is a requirement in many educational platforms and is a preference in some business platforms. Teams don’t have co-browsing or breakout room functionality, meaning that users cannot be placed in separate rooms or share a browser window remotely. Microsoft Teams, while massive, lacks micro-management potential due to a few features it misses. As a bonus feature, users can also customize their backgrounds. The sheer scale of Microsoft Teams sets it apart from the competition and allows for it to be useful to both small businesses and massive corporate structures. The app can host up to 10,000 individuals, and potentially up to 250 individuals with the free version of the software. The video conference feature of the app allows for communicating face to face with team members as well. These options make it ideal for business or educational environments. Microsoft Teams allows users to create teams, channels, and conferences to chat with team members that are online.
